Streets are the lifeblood of any city. As an important urban design element, "streetscaping " has the potential to turn ordinary roads into places where miracles happen. Any streetscape design should not only improve the artistic of the street, but also focus on sustainable development, making it more interactive, dynamic and stimulate sense of belonging. Moreover, for any city, streets are a reflection of its culture and values to shape the uniqueness of urban culture. Therefore, designers hope to make better use of environmental elements to beautify and activate the streets. If a design scheme takes into account the elements of benign street life such as legibility, safety, adaptability and economy, then it is able to provide a sustainable and public place for the city to live, work, play and contribute to the vitality of the region.

01 What is Streetscaping?

Streetscape is a term to describe the natural and built fabric of the street and defined as the design quality of the street and its visual effect. To put it simply, it is a view of the streets of a city. The concept recognizes that a street is a public place where people are able to engage in various activities. Streetscapes and their visual experience largely influence public places where people interact, and it ultimately helps define a community’s aesthetic quality, economic activity, health, and sustainability.

A successful streetscape has multiple aspects. Because all roads have multiple users and serve many functions, each streetscape design must be environmental sensitive. Transportation systems must consider the environment or physical setting and use design approaches and materials that are consistent with local conditions. A streetscape needs to have boundaries to ensure safe travel for all roadway users. Signs, curbs, fences and landscaping can effectively create an inclusive and safe environment that provides a sense of physical comfort for diverse users and activities. The aesthetic appeal elements of road greeningfancy lighting, fun and practical street furniture, clean and tidy streets, and outdoor dining contribute to a town’s sense of place. All street facilities should be designed to allow people to get out of vehicles to socialize, interact with the environment, and discover more options and possibilities.

In landscape design, it is important to consider the paving as well as other materials, which can be symbolic, sustainable, artistic or even related to the history of the site. When used properly, mixing pavements in the site can create movement and visual continuity, resulting in a successful design.

Superkilen

© Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG),Superflex,Topotek1

Superkilen is located in one of Copenhagen's most ethnically diverse communities. This urban park project represents 60 different countries. The apparent change in material divides the park into three parts: red square, black square and green park. Red square symbolizes the market, culture and sports, and it is a vibrant red concrete. Black square is a place for parties and socializing, including game tables, Japanese playground and barbecue area. The striped asphalt creates an optical illusion, gives the space a sense of movement, and really draws you through the place.

Based on the protection of urban ecological environment, the planning and design of modern urban greening landscape ues the existing urban public land to improve the green rate of each public green space, so as to improve the urban ecological environment problems and improve the living comfort of urban residents. How to organically combine the green landscape with surrounding buildings and public facilities to make the green space interactive, pro-human, is also an issue worth considering in the design.

Tainan Spring

© MVRDV

"Tainan Spring" by MVRDV’s aims to bring the greenery to the city. As a result, both the public square and Haian Road see the introduction of large areas of planting, which makes use of local plant species mixed together in a way that emulates the natural verdant landscape located to the east of Tainan, with trees, shrubs, and grasses providing multiple layers of vegetation. The density of these plant beds varies in response to the shop frontages, providing more space for people where needed and for plants in between.

04-2:Case Study @

04-2:Case Study @Urban Furniture

In the landscape of urban public space, the visual proportion of urban furniture reaches more than 1/5. Its form, composition and color, to a large extent, image the quality of urban landscape. In addition, most necessary activities, spontaneous activities and social activities carried out by people in public space need to be supported by urban furniture. At the same time, urban furniture also has more important social value, which is mainly reflected in its dialectical relationship with the city. On the one hand, urban furniture placed in the city is an important part of the overall urban environmental system. On the other hand, urban furniture is also an important carrier to reflect the spiritual connotation, cultural characteristics, vitality and appearance of a city.

JDS Architects have designed a street lamp called Alphabet City Lights, the project aims to create a series of configurations that can be adapted according to surroundings. According to Julien De Smedt, JDS ARCHITECTS, different places and spaces should be lit differently. How to adapt lighting to places without always changing design? This lamppost family functions as an alphabet of light, where each configuration is a new letter to light up a specific context. The design is almost invisible, just a simple round steel profile perforated randomly to let let some light come out.

The TULIPs are public amenities that work in synergy with the supply of local commerces and cultural and touristic attractions. A 100 meter (300 feet) long “urban table” was precisely implanted between the existing furniture and trees that perforate the elevated, angular metal grille in the center of the site. The colour yellow is thus celebrated in this tone on tone installation. This festive, joyous and luminous colour palette attracts stares from passers-by and introduces a marked contrast with the monochromatic shades of the existing park.
